Barrow County residents will be voting on the renewal of the County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) on November 7, 2017. If approved, the sales tax will fund capital improvements for roadways, parks and recreation, public safety, and city projects. Knowing how important these choices are to the future of Barrow County and the impact projects will have on the community for years to come, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners would like to invite you to participate in the project selection process.
SPLOST is an acronym for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. It is an optional one percent sales tax which the State of Georgia allows counties to collect to fund certain capital outlay projects as proposed by county government and participating qualified municipal governments. SPLOST is designed to allow voters to have a voice in capital outlay projects they would like to see within their county that would otherwise be paid for with general funds and property tax revenues. SPLOST proceeds may not be used for operating expenses or maintenance of a SPLOST project or any other county or municipal facility or service.
A Citizens Project Selection Committee (CPSC) is being formed to make recommendations for specific county and city projects that will be funded by the proposed SPLOST. The assistance of interested and concerned citizens is needed to provide constructive guidance on key issues such as roadway improvements, parks and recreation, public safety, water and sewer infrastructure, and various city projects. An organizational meeting was held on Monday, October 17, 2016, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the Terry England Conference Room of Lanier technical College located at 965 Austin Road, Winder.
The committee’s immediate role will be to review and prioritize prospective county and city project categories and to share information with the constituent interest groups. The committee will help maintain open lines of communication between the County and the public and help maximize the benefits of the sales tax proceeds.
County residents who are interested in serving on the Citizens Project Selection Committee should contact the Clerk of the County Commissioners, Mrs. Danielle Austin, at (770) 307‐3005 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
