Planning & Community Development Department:

The function of Barrow County Department of Planning and Community Development is to promote and enhance the quality of life of residents, visitors, property owners, and businesses of Barrow County. The Department accomplishes its mission through programs and services that encourage high quality development.

The Department provides administration of the county’s Comprehensive Plan, Unified Development Code (UDC), occupational tax licensing, alcohol licensing, and most recent State of Georgia building codes. This department processes and provides code inspection services for development and building permits, business license, alcohol license, erosion & sediment control permits, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits, and other UDC regulations. The Department also administers the zoning and variance process and provides staff support to the Planning Commission and Board of Appeals. The department provides technical assistance to citizens, developers, builders, and other county departments.

The Geographic Information System (GIS) division provides a support function to all county departments and the general public by creating, updating, and maintaining an efficient geographic information system. This division also assigns and maintains the structure street address system and approves all street and subdivision names for the entire county and all municipalities.
