Victor Lord Park has been an asset to the citizens of Barrow County for decades. For many years there were only three fields – two softball fields and one baseball field. The Phase II expansion of the park occurred in 2001-2002 and saw 27.3 acres added to the 38.7 acres that the park sat on at the time. Included in the Phase II expansion was the Leisure Services Center, four baseball/softball fields, a concession/restroom building, a playground, tennis courts, and parking.
Since the Phase II expansion there have been several other improvements made to the park. Fields 1-4 and the concession building have seen improvements throughout the years; tee ball fields were also upgraded/added in 2015 as part of SPLOST 2012.
Annually, Victor Lord Park has more than 100,000 visitors. An array of youth sports, adult softball, tennis, soccer, and much more are offered at the park. Travel tournaments alone bring in approximately 20,000. Through the current expansion, 37.3 acres are being added to Victor Lord Park, bringing the total acreage to 103.3.
LITTLE BACKGROUND ON THE CURRENT EXPANSION
A Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) 2018 Citizen Committee was formed in October 2016 for the purpose of soliciting citizen input concerning possible County projects to be included and providing a formal recommendation to the Board of Commissioners. The Citizen Committee met bi-monthly from October 2016-June 2017 and developed a formal SPLOST 2018 capital project recommendation. The SPLOST 2018 Referendum Resolution included a Citizen Committee recommendation for a "Level 2 Project" in the amount of $7,358,000 to fund improvements at Victor Lord Park upon the 35 +/- acres recently leased from State of Georgia. The Barrow County Board of Commissioners approved and adopted the Referendum Resolution calling for the reimposition of SPLOST on July 28th, 2017. The results of the November 7th, 2017 SPLOST Referendum were 73% "Yes" votes, and 27% "No" votes.
